Hollanders die zichzelf zo noemen zie ik al snel als de <i>rednecks<\/i> van de Lage Landen. Er klinkt een zielig soort nationalisme in door voor een land dat niet bestaat.<br \/>\nIn de Christian Science Monitor staat vandaag een <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/2005\/0126\/p15s01-wome.html\">artikel<\/a> over Pups for Peace, een Israelisch\/Amerikaans particulier initiatief waarbij honden worden opgeleid om explosieven op te sporen onder reizigers van het openbaar vervoer. Zo wordt geprobeerd zelfmoordterroristen tegen te houden. In het verhaal wordt verteld over een zo&#8217;n hond, een <i>Dutch Shepherd<\/i>.<br \/>\nHoe zou je dat vertalen vroeg ik me af, want mijn kynologische kennis is niet zo groot. Hollandse Herder? Dat klonk bekend in de oren. Maar wacht&#8230; Is Dutch dan het Engelse woord voor Hollands?<br \/>\nIk pakte de Van Dale erbij.<br \/>\nNederlands = Dutch<br \/>\nHollands = Dutch<br \/>\nEn in het Engels betekent <i>Hollands<\/i> jenever.<br \/>\nDat is toch een mooie tragiek. Willen de Hollanders zich op hun unieke eigenschappen voor laten staan, op hun rode konen, witte haren en blauwe ogen, bestaat het begrip niet eens in de buitenwereld.<br \/>\nJa, er is zoiets als <i>Hollandish<\/i>.<br \/>\nMaar dat klinkt nog Duitser dan Dutch.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ik mijd het woord Hollands, behalve dan als het gaat om zaken die betrekking hebben op de twee provincies Noord- en -Zuid.
