\"nlgezellig.jpg\"Als er één verschijnsel is dat Nederlands is dan is het wel ‘gezelligheid’. Het woord schijnt onvertaalbaar te zijn. Of dat echt zo is weet ik niet maar ik koester die illusie graag. Zoals ook gezelligheid een illusie is. Gezelligheid houd je in stand, je moet er moeite voor doen want anders is het zo weg. Iedere Nederlander weet wat je bedoelt met de opmerking ‘laten we het gezellig houden’. Als die opmerking gemaakt wordt, is de prettige illusie overigens meestal al verstoord.
\nGezelligheid is een fijne staat van verkeren omdat het een soort gelijkheid schept. De beroemde gelijkheid van de schaatsbaan in de polder. Het is het soort gelijkheid waar Nederland, een land dat redelijk wars is van hiërachische verhoudingen, dol op is.
\nHet ergste daarentegen wat een mens kan overkomen is ‘gedwongen gezelligheid’. Het roept meteen het beeld op van maagkrampen en gillend wegrennen. Dus wat ons lief is, kan ook een marteling zijn.
\nDat is het probleem met het debat over de Nederlandse identiteit. De critici van Maxima hebben niet helemaal ongelijk als ze opkomen voor nationaal bewustzijn. Maar hun dwingende toon maakt het nogal ongezellig. En dat is erg onnederlands.
\nHet Nederlanderschap is net als gezelligheid. Je kunt het niet afdwingen en al helemaal niet op hoge toon. Wie dat wel poogt, doet het Nederlanderschap geweld aan.
